When Don’t Look Back originally came out in 1997, John Lee Hooker was living a happy, comfortable life. He spent most of his time in his ranch-style home in a suburban cul-de-sac in Redwood City, California. He enjoyed watching his favorite baseball team, the Los Angeles Dodgers, on satellite TV. He’d spend hours on the phone, speaking to family and friends. He’d pick up his guitar whenever the spirit moved him, improvising new blues or replaying an old favorite.
During the Don’t Look Back sessions, I was lucky enough to coax John Lee Hooker and Chicago blues legend Buddy Guy to sit down for the only interview they’d ever do together. Midway through, Buddy recalled growing up in rural Louisiana, when John Lee Hooker’s songs would come crackling over the radio: “In those days, you couldn’t turn your radio on and find a guitar player every time you changed the dial. If you didn’t listen to the country and western coming out of Texas, you had to listen to John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, T-Bone Walker, Lonnie Johnson and those people like that. There was only a handful of guitar players, because there wasn’t a lot of money being made by a guitar player, especially if you were black. You were just a guitar player. We learned to play guitar for the love of the guitar, not for the love of money.”
“That’s right,” echoed Hooker. “It was love of the guitar.”
