MELODIC POWER METAL! EXCALION, with singer Jarmo Paakkonen, one of the countries greatest talents, is THE new Melodic Power Metal hope from Finland. The powerful, but at the same time incredibly melodious band presents ten perfectly composed and arranged Metal pearls. This album is a "must buy" for all fans of Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica or Nightwish.
How the name EXCALION came up or how this gang of young, talented musicians in distant Finnish Konnevesi agreed to go by it, is a bit blurry today for all involved persons. But one thing is clear: in December 2000, Jarmo "Jappe" Myllyvirta (keyboardist), Henri Pirkkalainen (drums), and Tero Vaaja (guitar) met - three great musicians who would cause some sensation in the future. In a tiny rehearsal room and together with bass player Timo Sahlberg, they started to work meticulously on Jarmos song ideas, which had matured for some time.
When they were looking for a singer, Lady Luck helped the young band: at that time, singer Jarmo Paakkonen had already become famous throughout the country for his great voice. After all his bands had split just then, the exceptional talent was free, and so the course for an excellent collaboration could be set already in January 2001. EXCALION were complete! Without further delay, the boys began to record the songs 'Wintertime', 'Call Of The Earth' and 'Sinners Symphony' under adverse conditions in the rehearsal room, and soon after that, EXCALION played their debut show in their local Tyovaentalo Club. Apart from the already existing original compositions, they covered Stratovarius and Nightwish (without the vocals). The reactions were fantastic, and soon they found a second guitar player, Kimmo Hanninen, with whom more possibilities seemed to open up.
In the autumn of 2001, the first official demo was recorded in the Kaktus-Studio in Jyvдskylд in just two days. Besides 'Sinners Symphony', the two brand-new songs 'Forlorn' and 'Heart & Home' were taped. But over the next two years the activities of the newcomers were hampered by the military service of some band members and several technical factors. Nevertheless, they played some gigs and invested a lot of work and time in writing songs and intense rehearsing, which united the band more and more. At that time the second EXCALION-demo was produced, featuring - apart from new pieces like 'Temptation Wasteland', 'Obsession To Prosper', 'Lady Moon', 'The Way' and 'Stage Of Lies' - the progressive epos 'Megalomania' which runs longer than 10 minutes. The boys secured themselves a record contract with Sound Riot Records with this demo.
In September 2005, the album 'Primal Exhale' was released it had been recorded in the Watercastle-Studio in Jyvaskyla and featured overhauled old and totally new songs the band had been writing throughout the whole year 2004. Unfortunately, Kimmo Hanninen and Timo Sahlberg left the band shortly after the release - they did not have enough time and commitment any more. After the band had found a new and even better guitar player, the extremely talented Vesa Nupponen, EXCALION decided to carry on as a quintet - Tero Vaaja changed from guitar to bass. In hindsight, this manoeuvre turned out to be a lucky choice because within a short span of time, the spark caused a fire and the creative potential of the band could unfold.
EXCALION came out with songs for the second album just like that. The opening song 'The Wingman', the dramatic 'I Failed You' or the power ballad 'Delta Sunrise' show a powerful, but at the same time incredibly musical and melodious side of the band without ever drifting into too progressive or even kitschy waters. The album, titled "Waterlines" will be released under the flag of Limb Music Products and contains ten perfectly composed and arranged Melodic Metal pearls shining absolutely as brightly as Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica or Nightwish. Soundwise refined in the Watercastle-Studio under the wings of Arttu Sarvanne and provided with a bonus track, a bonus video clip and a fantasy cover artwork by Jason Juta (Domain, Altaria, Requiem). "Waterlines" is an indispensable jewel for the collection of every fan of sophisticated, melodic Metal.
