WHITE LION was formed by MABEL and STUDS vocalist MIKE TRAMP (a.k.a. Michael Trampenau). A native of Denmark, the singer had released a 1975 7" single, 'Big Man In Town', in collaboration with his brother Dennis Trampenau credited simply to DENNIS & MICHAEL. Tramp's tenure with STUDS had seen the group, comprising Danish musicians based in Spain, release a self-titled 1982 album through the Hispavox label. The singer relocated to New York with the latter band in a quest for fame and fortune. A highly photogenic frontman with a distinctive vocal style, Tramp undoubtedly succeeded, as the band scored two monster US hits with 'Wait' and the near chart topping ballad 'When The Children Cry'. Original band guitarist Oliver Steffanson had made his mark with GEISHA. His tenure was short-lived however, as he returned to Denmark, there forging eccentric rockers Y in alliance with erstwhile GEISHA colleagues. Steffanson was to remain on good terms with Tramp throughout his career though and their paths would cross in later years.
With Steffanson no longer involved, Tramp re-assembled the band with the exceptionally talented guitarist Vito Bratta, a veteran of DREAMER, and former ANGEL and 707 bassist Felix Robinson. The group recorded their debut album, 'Fight To Survive', in Frankfurt, Germany working with producer Peter Hauke, However, Felix Robinson would quit upon the group's return to New York after it became apparent that Elektra Records was placing no priority on releasing the record.
Later that same year Felix Robinson was replaced by ex-AMERICADE bassist Dave Spitz. The 'Fight To Survive' album was eventually released in Japan through JVC Victor in 1985. By this time Nicky Capozzi had left the group and been replaced by former ANTHRAX and CITIES man Greg D'Angelo. The group landed a part in the Tom Hanks movie 'The Money Pit' that initially, and bizarrely, called for the musicians to be dressed like giant flies. This idea was thankfully overruled and the group performed in the movie, featuring in the closing credits. Naturally, this flirtation with Hollywood did not rate as one of the band's most memorable of experiences. Subsequent live work found WHITE LION supporting KROKUS across the USA.
The band had requested the services of drummer Eric Singer, then ensconced as a member of both LITA FORD's band and BLACK SABBATH, but Singer declined. Upon producer Jeff Glixman's advice, Dave Spitz had walked out to join BLACK SABBATH, for the 'Seventh Star' album, the night after shooting a video for 'Broken Heart'. Ex-RONDINELLI bassist James LoMenzo was recruited to fill his shoes after a brief liaison with Bruno Ravel. Ravel would become a star in his own right, with DANGER DANGER, following a spell as Billy Sheehan's replacement in TALAS.
WHITE LION was signed to Atlantic Records in late 1986 and immediately set to work on a new album. The resulting 'Pride' was produced by Michael Wagener, after the group had originally planned to work with Peter Hauke in Frankfurt once again. In fact, some material was recorded with Hauke before being scrapped once the Atlantic deal was signed and sealed. To promote 'Pride' upon release, WHITE LION toured as opening act to FREHLEY'S COMET and Y&T and had also played arena shows with TRIUMPH and later KISS.
The group scored a huge American hit single with the ballad 'When The Children Cry', a single that would reach the heady heights of number 3 in the Billboard charts and made their first appearances in Britain and Europe in early 1988. WHITE LION’s profile was also massively enhanced when ‘Wait’ too went top ten in the USA and the album lead in track, the guitar driven ‘Hungry’, scored massive radio play.
The New Jersey based independent label Grand Slamm eventually gained the rights to release the antecedent 'Fight To Survive' in the United States. The album was subsequently issued in Europe by Music For Nations. Before the release of a brand new album, WHITE LION toured through America on a package that was headlined by OZZY OSBOURNE and also included VIXEN as the opening act.
'Big Game' received indifferent reviews in both the USA and Britain, many fans and critics mystified by the apparent drop in songwriting quality. The track ‘Little Fighter’ garnered a modicum of exposure but the band’s only real attempt at a hit, a less than spirited cover of the GOLDEN EARRING blockbuster 'Radar Love’, failed to make much headway. Nevertheless, WHITE LION toured in Europe opening for MЦTLEY CRЬE in October 1989, followed by a headlining tour of Japan in November, playing shows in Tokyo and Osaka before planning a British tour for early 1990. However, this jaunt had to be cancelled due to Tramp having to undergo surgery to have his tonsils removed, after which the group began work on a brand new album.
With the release of 'Mane Attraction' in the Spring of 1991,WHITE LION finally returned to Britain to play a club tour in early June, bringing along management stable mates TYKETTO as support. However, within two weeks of the band returning to the States reports filtered through that the rhythm section of D'Angelo and Lomenzo had decamped. The pair would re-emerge playing with ACE FREHLEY's live band. D'Angelo also had a short tem in BLACKTHORNE. ‘Mane Attraction’ had once again delivered a set of mediocre songs that did not cross over to radio, exacerbating internal tensions.
Wasting no time in picking up new members, the duo of Tramp and Bratta, brought in ex-FIONA and Y&T drummer Jimmy DeGrasso together with former LITA FORD and ALICE COOPER bassist Tommy Caradonna. The new line-up would be short-lived and after a poorly attended American tour Tramp was telling the Metal press that WHITE LION was no more, the group splitting by the end of the year.
Bratta remained with Atlantic for a solo project involving ex-SHOUT and WILD HORSES vocalist John Levesque that never got off the ground. The guitarist also guested on the 1993 eponymous C.P.R. album. Mike Tramp set to work in assembling the Seattle influenced FREAK OF NATURE. After a series of well received records and a quite mammoth series of international live dates, FREAK OF NATURE was laid to rest and the singer unveiled his first solo album, 'Capricorn', in 1997 and toured in America during the Summer of the following year playing an acoustic set opening for LYNYRD SKYNYRD and PETER FRAMPTON.
In 1993 both D'Angelo and LoMenzo toured with ex-OZZY OSBOURNE guitarist ZAKK WYLDE. Lomenzo stayed with Wylde for the Southern flavoured PRIDE & GLORY. The bassist would unite with PRIDE & GLORY drummer Brian Tischy to form a reliable rhythm team touring in SLASH'S SNAKEPIT, the solo venture put together by GUNS N' ROSES guitarist Slash. D'Angelo ran a recording studio in Los Angeles for a while before becoming involved in the film world, working as a producer on the children's movie 'Pumpkin Hill' in 1997.
In latter years, Lomenzo recorded with ex-GUNS N' ROSES man GILBY CLARKE and has also formed a video company with Mike Tramp. DeGrasso joined veteran Thrashers MEGADETH. MIKE TRAMP would gain respect with a series of commendable solo releases, his band supporting ZZ TOP in Europe throughout 2003 and recording a live album in the process.
Plans for a full blown WHITE LION reformation were announced in October of 2003 and shortly after it was revealed that the "reunion" line up was to comprise Tramp, the RATT and WHITESNAKE credited WARREN DE MARTINI on guitar, bassist James Lomenzo and drummer Jimmy DeGrasso of MEGADETH, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES and Y&T repute. Despite De Martini's supposed inclusion official sources still held out hope that Vito Bratta would also be participating. Within days of the announcement MIKE TRAMP had refuted the claims, stating it was "speculation". Nevertheless, European festival dates had been pre-announced, then pulled.
In November of 2004, shortly after the release of MIKE TRAMP's album 'Songs I Left Behind', the singer announced the issue of a limited edition, six CD box set entitled 'The Bootleg Series'. This collection included pre-WHITE LION material from STUDS and DANISH LIONS plus early WHITE LION demos, the original recordings for the 'Pride' album, 'Big Game' demos and 'Mane Attraction' demos. Meantime, the first new WHITE LION recording in many years came with the release of the 'VH1 Classic Metal Mania: Stripped' compilation album through Sidewinder Music, the band re-recording an acoustic version of the power ballad 'When The Children Cry'.
Billed as TRAMP'S WHITE LION Mike Tramp took out his new band to tour North America commencing in February of 2005. Ex-WHITE LION drummer Greg D'Angelo (a.k.a. "GD3") joined ANTIPRODUCT in June. January of 2006 found James Lomenzo joining the ranks of MEGADETH.
