Expanding the minute world from inside the mountains of effects pedals that exemplifies the sound, performance and vision that breathed life into the band, making it louder, more intense and aurally stimulating than ever, Amplifier deliver ‘Insider’.
The follow-up to 2003’s eponymous exploration and definition of amplifying sound, ‘Insider’ is the product of darkness. With ‘Amplifier’ came a sound that was bathed in the warmth of the sun, ‘Insider’ is the antithesis of its predecessor shrouded in the darkest thoughts drawn from deep within the recesses of Amplifier’s collective psyche.
Released on 2 October 2006 through SPV/Steamhammer, ‘Insider’ is 12 tracks of thought-provoking power and melodic harmonising beauty that is set to truly equate the name Amplifier with the best British rock bands of the 21st Century. From the resonating opening of Gustav’s Arrival, through the rhythmic typewriter drill of ‘Procedures’, to the claustrophobic birth of title track ‘Insider’, Amplifier’s second album is here to be discovered.
The Amplifier story began eight years ago when Sel Balamir (guitar, vocals, London), armed with the spoils of another, ill-fated rock mission and high on ideas, invited Neil Mahony (bass, Dublin) and Matt Brobin (drums, Cardiff) to join him on an adventure that would take them to the outer reaches of the UK, then Europe and finally the universe.
Back then, with Neil working in a music store and Matt teaching drums, they knew where it could all go. All three had arrived in Manchester, now their adopted home, for their own reasons, living their separate storylines, but as soon as they met, they were united by a shared intention to make things bigger than they already are: to amplify.
Equipped with a philosophy that questions existence, Amplifier create grand, audacious music of gargantuan riffs sailing swollen serpentine bass spines, powered along on kerosene drums.
Fresh from explosive performances at this year’s festivals, including taking the prestigious position of opening the main stage at the UK’s Download festival and following Tool at Denmark’s Roskilde, Amplifier are due to embark on live dates this Autumn across Europe in support of ‘Insider’, spreading their sound and vision wider with each release.
Revisiting the success of their debut, Amplifier recorded ‘Insider’ with the help of Steve Lyon (The Cure, Depeche Mode) with Sel Balamir taking the role of producer whilst Chris Sheldon (Foo Fighters, Biffy Clyro) was once again recruited to mix the album.
