HATEBREED is a Hardcore influenced Metal band founded during 1993 in New Haven, Connecticut. The band, comprising vocalist Jamey Jasta, guitarists Lou "Boulder" Richards and Sean Martin, bassist Chris Beattie and drummer Rigg Ross built a live reputation with supports to the likes of ENTOMBED, DEFTONES, NAPALM DEATH and SLAYER. Initial demo recordings, dubbed 'Stricken Creation', would be utilised for a split 7" single shared with NEGLECT. A further demo, 'Under The Knife', scored the band notable recognition with emphasis placed on the popular track 'Kill And Addict'. In 1995 Pin Drop Records included the cut 'Mark My Words' on a four way split 7" EP, 'Together As One', in collaboration with HOLDSTRONG, BROTHERS'S KEEPERS and CROSS CURRENT.
HATEBREED, debuting commercially in 1997 with the Victory Records album 'Satisfaction Is The Death Of Desire', promoted this opus with national dates allied with DESPAIR. Smorgasboard weighed in shortly afterward with the 'Under The Knife' sessions pressed onto mini-album that December.
The band, having installed Jamie 'Pushbutton' McVey on drums, would be signed up as strong support to SLAYER's Autumn 'God Hates Us All' American tour but would withdraw shortly before the dates to concentrate on a new album. Frontman Jamie Jasta would contribute guest vocals to the track 'Domination' on the 2001 BIOHAZARD album 'Uncivilization'.
SLAYER guitarist Kerry King would guest on the track ‘Final Prayer For The Human Race’ on the 2002 HATEBREED album ‘Perseverance’. The album debuted on the Billboard charts at no. 50 selling over 28'000 copies in its first week of sale and eventually topping the 200,000 mark. The records success and the bands touring profile also regenerated interest in their 'Satisfaction Is The Death Of Desire', this album clocking up over 150,000 sales. The band embarked on a lengthy series of North American dates, although the planned Montreal and Quebec shows were cancelled at short notice when Jamie Jasta had to undergo emergency dental treatment. September 2002 tour plans for North America had the band paired up with Death Metal band SIX FEET UNDER. The band formed part of an impressive package tour of Europe, dubbed the 'Eastpack Resistance' dates, during November and December. Topped by BIOHAZARD the cast also numbered a billing of AGNOSTIC FRONT, DISCIPLINE, ALL BORO KINGS, DEATH THREAT, and BORN FROM PAIN. The band would be confirmed as one of the headline attractions at the mammoth 'Beast Fest' event in Japan during December of 2002, also hooking up with SOULFLY for a run of Australian dates the same month.
The band, promoting an October 2003 Zeus produced album 'The Rise Of Brutality', united with MADBALL, HATE ETERNAL, TERROR and CEPHALIC CARNAGE for the North American 'Rise Of Brutality' tour commencing 10th September. Maintaining their road presence a lengthy string of US Jдgermeister sponsored dates commencing 9th October and running through until mid December saw the band hooked up with SLAYER and ARCH ENEMY. 'Rise Of Brutality' entered the Billboard charts at a respectable no. 30, shifting over 32,000 units in its first week of sale.
HATEBREED signed up for the US 'Headbangers Ball' tour ranked alongside DAMAGEPLAN, DROWNING POOL and UNEARTH in March of 2004 but then withdrew from the first batch of dates in the wake of the death from brain cancer of their manager Steve Richards. Touring would then resume, although one glitch in the schedule came in early May when the band missed out on a Vancouver show after being refused entry in Canada by border guards.
The band would be confirmed for the mammoth US 'Ozzfest' festivals for the Summer, sharing the second stage alongside co-headline act SLIPKNOT and fellow supports UNEARTH, LAMB OF GOD, EVERY TIME I DIE, ATREYU, LACUNA COIL and BLEEDING THROUGH. The group, cutting short a European tour by cancelling scheduled shows in Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece and Norway due to an apparent urgent need of dental surgery for two band members, also scheduled 'Off-fest' headline dates aligned with SLAYER and headliners JUDAS PRIEST along the way. Amidst this schedule, Jasta had donated guest vocals to the ICEPICK track 'Born to Crush You', featured on the 'UFC Ultimate Beatdowns Vol. 1 Metal' compilation released through Nitrus Records. Both Jamey Jasta and Sean Martin also donated their skills as studio guests to Rapper MC NECRO's album 'The Pre-Fix For Death'.
HATEBREED returned to Europe in October, acting as openers to SLIPKNOT and SLAYER. The band put in a sustained campaign in North America to round out the year, uniting with TERROR, FULL BLOWN CHAOS and NO WARNING and from 6th December until 22nd December then adding SICK OF IT ALL to the bill for later shows. That same month the HATEBREED track 'Live For This' would be nominated in the 'Best Metal Performance' category for the 47th annual Grammy Awards.
The group scheduled US gigs in alliance with AGNOSTIC FRONT, DIECAST, LOVE IS RED and THE AUTUMN OFFERING for the second leg of the 'Heavyweights Of Hardcore' tour in January 2005. In June HATEBREED frontman Jamey Jasta announced a musical union, given a working title of CROWBREED, subsequently switched to KINGDOM OF SORROW, with DOWN and CROWBAR's Kirk Windstien. The Summer would be spent in partnership with AGNOSTIC FRONT once again gigging across South America. The band then undertook a European package tour billed 'Persistence' co-billed with AGNOSTIC FRONT, NAPALM DEATH, BORN FROM PAIN, A PERFECT MURDER and BLEED THE SKY. November witnessed the '10 Years Of Brutality' tour with the band forming up a heavyweight union with MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD, FULL BLOWN CHAOS, GIZMACHI, IF HOPE DIES and MANNTIS. Crossing the Atlantic, the band engaged with the European 'Persistence' tour in December, ranked alongside AGNOSTIC FRONT, THE RED CHORD, NAPALM DEATH, BORN FROM PAIN and FULL BLOWN CHAOS. On 15th December Jasta notably acted as both host and performer for the ROADRUNNER UNITED conglomerate at the New York Nokia Theater for an all star Metal evening. A previously unreleased track, 'To The Threshold', would be included on the Roadrunner compilation 'MTV Headbanger's Ball - The Revenge'.
The band expanded to a quintet once again during March 2006, pulling in FROM THE DEPTHS, DECREPIT, DEAD OF NIGHT, TERROR, RINGWORM and INTEGRITY man Frank Novinec. In April the group toured Australia, making up a bill comprising DISTURBED, 10 YEARS and KORN, after which theu announced signature to Roadrunner Records.
The band put in a significant appearance at the GUNS N' ROSES headlined 'Download' festival in Castle Donington, UK on June 11th. 'Ozzfest' once again loomed for the 2006 summer touring season, the group sharing the festival stages with OZZY OSBOURNE, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, LACUNA COIL, DISTURBED, ATREYU, UNEARTH, BLEEDING THROUGH, NORMA JEAN, A LIFE ONCE LOST, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, THE RED CHORD, FULL BLOWN CHAOS, WALLS OF JERICHO, ALL THAT REMAINS, DRAGONFORCE, AVENGED SEVENFOLD and BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME.
New album 'Supremacy sold 27,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at number 31 on the Billboard charts. Pushing the 'Supremacy' album, the group hit the US touring circuit in September heading up a strong billing of NAPALM DEATH, EXODUS, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, DESPISED ICON and FIRST BLOOD. Sadly, former guitarist Lou "Boulder" Richards, who had appeared on the group's 1997 'Satisfaction Is The Death Of Desire' and 2002's Perseverance' albums, passed away on September 13th.
HATEBREED teamed up with UNEARTH and FULL BLOWN CHAOS for a European tour, hitting Germany, Denmark, Holland, Italy, France, Switzerland, Austria the UK and Belgium, in November.
