There is no such work of art which is part of our European cultural heritage and known to everyone, like the collection medieval lyrics from 1230 known as the Carmina Burana. This work, mostly written in the Latin language, is the most important source of information about medieval songs and poetry.
The musical interpretation that Carl Orff made in 1937 was revolutionary for the world of classical music. However it had not much to do with medieval music whatsoever, as the composition reflected more the taste of the cultural elite of his time. There have been attempts to reconstruct a version that would be closer to the supposed original medieval versions, but these attempts have never been that succesful and perhaps this is caused by the academic precision with which the historic sources have been studied and interpreted.
The German medieval group Corvus Corax for some years played around with the idea to take a different approach here, and to choose a musical approach to set the original lyrics to which would be more folk oriented, such as the minstrels of the 12th to 15th century, so a musical trip through those times would be created. The lyrics of the Carmina Burana should be the red thread that transports the listener through the course of the musical performance.
To make this possible the band made contact with a conductor who would be able to place himself outside the serious classical world with all the conventions and rules to judge the music itself with a fresh and creative outlook. This was found in conductor and composer Joerg Iwer. This grand project was a joint effort of the philharmonic orchestra and operachoir of the state theatre Cottbus, the Croat Ivan Pl.Zajc choir, the vocal ensemble Psalteria, Syrah of Qntal and Estampie, and the soloist Ingeborg Schoepf.
Corvus Corax is a band that forms the absolute top of the modern medieval scene. Being the creme de la creme of this scene the band have influenced many current bands with their approach of medieval music. Corvus Corax is active for some 15 years now with studying of all possible outings of medieval music, building original medieval instruments themselves, and they have found a completely unique style of their own over the course of the years that best reflects the way they think medieval music needs to sound to the ears of the modern world listener.
The band is hailing from the former East-Germany and started performing at street, markets and after some time they cautiously entered stages as well. The bandmemebers go by their minstrel names Wim, Castus Rabensang, Harmann der Drescher, Teufel, Patrick der Kalauer en Meister Selbfried. The instruments they use are all kinds of percussion, reconstructed medieval instruments, horns and bagpipes, that have been constructed craftfully by Wim to the medieval example. For the performance of the Carmina Burana Wim even build an organistrum, which is a very big version of a medieval lute.
It was the concern of conductor Joerg Iwer to let all contributing parties go together harmonically which absolutely wasn’t easy. Yet the result is almost near perfection when you watch the DVD images and realise the grandness and overwhelming effect of the total performance. The bagpipes and percussion reach out above the depth of the classical music which is contributed by the symphonyorchestra like flying carpets reaching out to the sky like flickering flames.
Everything seems orchestrated and directed, musically, the singing, but also the clothing, the dances and movements, the lighting and of course the great location of the museum island in Berlin. Everything was discussed and you can see that they tried their best to let every little detail support the impression of the total experience. The singing makes up an important part of the whole, but the dancers add subtle fairytale like spheres to this impressive performance of the Carmina Burana as well. The recordings you will see on this DVD are from the concerts that took place in the summer of 2005 at the museum insel in Berlin. There have been performances at the metalfestival Wacken Open Air and at some special locations in Germany as well.

On this DVD you will furthermore find an informative interview with the bandmembers of Corvus Corax temselves, who tell all about the ideas that led to the performance, the performance itself and the instruments which were used. You will also see comments made by the audience to which it is fun to watch the reactions of the young generation as well as those of the older more serious lovers of classical music. This is a unique document. Not to be missed.
