Kerry Livgren started as a guitar player with the band Kansas in 1971, but had to throw the towel shortly after because record companies found the band wasn't commercial enough. Livgren joined another group but retained the "Kansas" name. It was with this band that Kerry enjoyed great success after writing such classics as "Dust In The Wind" and "Carry On Wayward Son". The ancient members of Kansas however said goodbye to music and returned to a 'normal' life. Until the year 2001 when a record label called and explained to a perplexed Livgren that they had listened to demo recordings of his earlier band and wanted to release these songs on CD. The CD was duly released with Rolling Stone magazine praising the "profound eccentricity" of these "super freaks". With so much encouragement, the original formation finally got together to re-record five of their older songs, along with five newer songs that Kerry had recently written and the result was "Before Became After". But enough of the past, as the band are ready to move forward once again.
Proto-Kaw recorded "The Wait Of Glory" in GrandyZine Studios in Kansas(!). The band took their time recording from spring until November. "It's quite a change", explains Livgren. "We used to all live together in a house and made music from the morning till the evening. Today everybody has their day job. I've realised that it's not such a bad thing to take our time though. We approached 'The Wait Of Glory' in a very meticulous way". For Livgren, the biggest difference to the previous album lies in the relationship between the musicians. "When we recorded 'Before Became After', we didn't know who we were as a band. We were in a process of re-discovering each other. Now, with a completed CD and many live gigs, we've grown much stronger as a unit. The new album has an incredible power and sparkles with self-confidence, which can only develop through extensive experience with each other".
In order to really understand what Livgren means you have to listen to the album. The opener "Nevermore" impresses with its mercilessly dark mood of premonition which, here and there, condenses into absolute horror and displays sentimental multi part vocals in the chorus. Equally impressive is "The Vigil" which, on the basis of a wonderful melody, the band improvises so well that a shiver runs down your spine throughout the song. This piece was created, as Livgren explains, "in a magical way", so you will really believe. Other highlights include the relentless rocker "Old Number 63" (named after a steam engine) and the curiously titled "Osvaldo's Groceries", which is indescribable, and shows that the band don't take themselves too seriously.
The new album leaves no doubt that this collection of songs represent a band with a unique trademark, a progressive rock band in the true sense that embrace elements of jazz, psychedelics and most importantly a sense of humour. "Progressive in a new way", Livgren adds. "Freed from all those traps through which you slip into a predictable style".
