A raw Black Metal act out of Uppsala named after the infamous VON song. WATAIN was borne when former BLOODSPILL members vocalist / bassist Erik Danielson and guitarist C. Blom forged a union with K. Jonsson and Pelle Forsberg. WATAIN’s opening demo, titled ‘Go Fuck Your Jewish God’, complete with DARKTHRONE cover 'Unholy Black Metal', certainly put the cards on the table and before long Grim Rune Productions had picked the band up for a 7" single release.
WATAIN then signed to Drakkar Records in France for the first album, 2000's ‘Rabid Death's Curse’. Vinyl variants surfaced bearing the End All Life imprint. Blom would decamp following recording as the group persevered as a trio. Later live work introduced bass player Necromorbus (Tore Stjerna of CORPUS CHRISTII, IN AETURNUM and FUNERAL MIST) to the band.
A Brazilian manufactured cassette 'Ritual Macabre - Live ', recorded in Belgium, restricted to just 666 copies and featuring a cover version of DARKTHRONE's 'Transylvanian Hunger', arrived in 2000 courtesy of the Sakriligeous Warfare Productions label. That December WATAIN recorded the demo session 'The Ritual Macabre'.
A split single ‘The Misanthropic Ceremonies’ was released through Spikekult in 2001 in alliance with DIABOLICUM. WATAIN toured Europe during early 2002 in alliance with UNPURE. Meantime the Drakkar Productions label re-issued the 'Rabid's Death Curse' album complete with an extra track, as did the Thai In Coffin imprint for cassette versions. WATAIN's 2003 live line-up, for gigs on the October 'Stellar Descension Infernal' tour ranking alongside SECRETS OF THE MOON and AVERSE SEFIRA, included drummer Drummer Mork (a.k.a. Jonas Lindskog) of MALIGN and TRIUMPHATOR.
The 'Casus Luciferi' album saw release in November 2003 through Drakkar Productions with Norma Evangelium Diaboli issuing a limited edition vinyl print. Cassette variants, clad in different artwork, were released through the Rumanian label Mirgilus Siculorum Records. WATAIN opened 2004 with a one off Italian gig in February sharing the stage with MORTUARY DRAPE, CELESTIA, GOSFORTH and WARMONGER. May dates in Finland saw WATAIN on a package billing alongside KAAMOS, ANXIOUS DEATH and SLUGATHOR. The group secured the high profile support slot to DISSECTION's December UK tour dates.
WATAIN signed with French label Season Of Mist in November 2006. The album 'Sworn To The Dark' emerged in February. Norma Evangelium Diaboli issued a limited edition vinyl variant. International licenses were granted to Pulverised Records for Asia and Australia, Ajna for North America and Somber for South America.
WATAIN acted as support to CELTIC FROST and KREATOR for European tour dates in late March 2007. The band hit the North American touring circuit in early May 2007, uniting with ANGEL CORPSE, NEGATIVE PLANE, GRAVEWЬRM and NACHTMYSTIUM for the "Antichrist Vanguard" tour.
