Permanently Out of Stock!
At the spearhead of the Nu-Metal Alternative 90s Rock wave, Sacramento's DEFTONES forced their attentions onto the American public with a series of supports to the likes of KORN, BAD BRAINS and WHITE ZOMBIE. The group had been forged whilst at high school by frontman Chino Moreno (then going under the title 'Wong'- his real name is Camillo Wong Moreno), guitarist Stephen Carpenter, bass player Chi Cheng and original drummer John Taylor. The latter would decamp after a few years joining PRAYER WHEEL. Abe Cunningham of PHALLUCY would step in as a deputy, a position made more permanent as time elapsed.
The group signed up to the mighty Maverick label for debut effort 'Adrenaline'. Although bolstered by major label support, videos for 'Bored' and '7 Words' and healthy media praise the album passed by most listeners. Moreno would also put in a duet with Jonathon Davies on KORN's second album 'Follow The Leader'.
With the release of 1997's Terry Date produced 'Around The Fur', which included a cover version of DURAN DURAN's 'The Chauffeur'. DEFTONES broke big with huge selling singles 'My Own Summer (Shove It)'- also forming part of 'The Matrix' movie soundtrack- and 'Be Quiet And Drive (Far Away)'. The album also saw a contribution from SOULFLY's Max Cavalera. A heavy touring schedule would find the band as part of the 'Vans Warped' touring festival and as road mates to both LIMP BIZKIT and WILL HAVEN.
1998 found DEFTONES contributing their version of 'To Have And To Hold' for a DEPECHE MODE tribute album.
Moreno contributed guest vocals for one track on the SEVENDUST album. The singer appeared under the pseudonym of Pony 1, actually a mis-heard 'Pony Wong'.
As 1999 opened DEFTONES joined the billing as support, alongside PANTERA, to the mighty BLACK SABBATH. Moreno would also be revealed to be contributing lead vocal tracks to BLACK SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi's IOMMI project album. The ensuing tour would put it's fair share of strain on the band though as Cheng was forced out after doctor's insisted on surgery for a damaged left foot. Sergio Vega of QUICKSAND took the role as a temporary fill in. The tribulations did not end there though and on Valentine's day the band's equipment truck was stolen from outside of a Holiday Inn in Michigan. Most of the gear would be recovered in a pawn shop in Detroit.
The mellower even ambient influenced 'White Pony', once more produced by Date, saw DEFTONES officially inducting DJ Frank Delgado as a fifth member. The record witnessed a vocal collaboration with TOOL frontman Maynard James Keenan on the track 'Passenger'. The album debuted on the Billboard charts at no. 3 and fans were enticed further with limited edition 'Red' and 'Black' jewel case variants both boasting multimedia tracks and an exclusive bonus audio cut 'The Boy's Republic'.
Singles culled from the album included 'Change (In The House Of Flies)' and follow up 'Back To School', both enormous radio hits. With sales of 'White Pony' pressing the million mark in America DEFTONES set out on a headline tour backed by GODSMACK and PUDDLE OF MUDD.
A co-headline tour of America in alliance with GODSMACK throughout the summer of 2001 was hastily pulled when Doctors advised Moreno that he was in grave danger of serious throat damage. The DEFTONES gigs in San Francisco Shoreline Amphitheatre on July 17th, Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre on the 18th and the show in San Diego Sports Arena show on the 20th were all pulled from the schedule.
In DEFTONES downtime Cunnigham would reconvene his former band PHALLUCY resurrecting old recordings for the album 'Valium'. Moreno would also get to grips with a side project founding TEAM SLEEP with guitarist Todd Wilkinson and DJ Crook. The Terry Date produced TEAM SLEEP record would also see erstwhile FAITH NO MORE vocalist Mike Patton enrolled as well as HOLE bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur.
Delgado too got busy on an outside venture formulating the Hip Hop combo THE CO-DEFENDANTS with DJ Crook and DJ Epik.
Carpenter would not be left out founding not one but two extracurricular ventures. The first of these, KUSH created in cahoots with FEAR FACTORY's Christian Olde Wolbers on bass and Raymond Herrara on drums along with B-Real of CYPRESS HILL, put in their first live performance on the 11th of June at Hollywood's Club Vinyl.
The same night Carpenter and B-Real would debut their other act LOS MARIJUANOS, another all star combo in alliance with percussionist Bo Bo of CYPRESS HILL, guitarist Rogelio Lazano of DOWNSET and bassist Marty O'Brein from METHOD OF MAYHEM. This band would subsequently evolve to become MARY JANE'S BOYFRIEND adding JANE'S ADDICTION drummer Stephen Perkins.
In the studio meanwhile Carpenter would guest on the debut CHIMAIRA album. Moreno's TEAM SLEEP and Cunningham's PHALLUCY would ally themselves for a December American tour.
The DEFTONES contributed a previously unreleased track entitled 'The Boy's Republic' to the 'MTV Road Rules: Don't Make Me Pull This Thing Over — Volume 1' compilation in the summer of 2002. Upfront of an eponymous new album for 2003, which shifted 167,355 copies in its first sales week to land at no. 2 in the Billboard charts, the band engaged in what they styled "guerrilla" gigs in May, club dates announced just one day prior to the actual concert. The group then hooked up with the gargantuan 'Summer Sanitarium' arena tour with METALLICA, LINKIN PARK, LIMP BIZKIT and MUDVAYNE in July. The band missed the Minneapolis Metrodome gig after Chino Moreno suffered a groin injury. Subsequent European dates had the band partnered with A PERFECT CIRCLE.
The DEFTONES geared up for release of a new album, produced by industry veteran Bob Ezrin, with a burst of West Coast dates commencing 28th September at the House Of Blues in Los Angeles to showcase new songs. Support was apparently to come from veteran Thrash Metal band DEATH ANGEL. However, the band was pulled from these shows and replaced by DREDG, apparently because this news was leaked prematurely. Announcing a shift towards more riff orientared material, the group projected a recording date of early November, honing their album in Connecticut.
Stephen Carpenter would work as producer for Orange County's SCARS OF TOMORROW during April 2005. Back in the charts, the October release 'B-Sides & Rarities', a compilation of import-only B-sides, cover versions, unreleased mixes and other rarities, sold just under 27,000 copies in its first week of sale to debut at number 42 on the Billboard US album chart.
Throughout February and into April 2006 the band joined the 'Taste Of Chaos' US and Canadian festival tour alongside a mammoth billing comprising THRICE, ATREYU, AS I LAY DYING, STORY OF THE YEAR, DREDG, SILVERSTEIN, FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND, PELICAN, , THE RECEIVING END OF SIRENS, THE CONFESSION, ADAIR, STREET DRUM CORPS, GREELEY ESTATES, MILLIONAIRE and THE SMASHUP. The group then jumped onto the KORN headlined 'Family Values' festivals for the summer, sharing a bill including STONE SOUR, FLYLEAF and DIR EN GREY.
In November 'Saturday Night Wrist' sold 76,000 copies in the United States during its first week of release to land at number 10 on The Billboard 200 chart.
