Steve Hackett is an artist who has always sought new forms of expression. He brought an elegance and sophistication to his eight albums with Genesis and in a solo career spanning over twenty five years has produced twenty solo albums, each inimitably different from the last. After 2003’s acclaimed rock album “To Watch The Storms” and its classical successor “Metamorpheus” from 2005, the British guitarist now presents “Wild Orchids”, an album that is in many ways a synthesis of its predecessors.
With “Wild Orchids”, Hackett manages to surpass even the diversity of style and mood found on “Storms” and at the same time presents an even more homogenous album. Furthermore, the album integrates a classical element on a much grander scale than ever before. But is it still rock? Hackett smiles, “Rock gets bigger when you add an orchestra”, he explains and this is exactly what he did. Apart from Roger King, John Hackett, Rob Townsend and others who previously contributed to “Storms”, Hackett also utilised his Underworld Orchestra, with whom he recorded “Metamorpheus”. “When classical music works, it’s like getting the chance to fly with angels for me”, he muses, going on to explain “I love the combination of different styles and schools – bringing the club and the cathedral together”.
Not only does Hackett succeed in integrating these worlds, he also sends the listeners on something of an educational expedition. The special edition’s opening track, “Transylvanian Express” (Hackett’s advice is “Keep your arms and legs inside at all times whilst on the ride”) creates the impression of a fast, deeply moving drive through the night with a full moon and an assortment of creatures, an impression which becomes stronger as the album progresses. “Waters Of The Wild” combines Far Eastern sounds with those of the Caribbean, while “Set Your Compass” has a wonderful feel reminiscent of an old Scottish folk tune. “I’m looking for places without boundaries where borders and cultures collide in order to influence each other” remarks Hackett.
It’s within these landscapes that the wild orchids blossom. Hackett explains “The orchid is famous for being a cultivated plant, but when grown in the wild the perfume seems stronger and sweeter. Similarly the album introduces a few untamed characters who live on the edge - the psychopathic narrator of ‘Down Street’, the suicidal debutante of ‘To A Close’ or ‘Man In The Long Black Coat’, trailing havoc in their wake”.
“Man In The Long Black Coat” is a cover of a Bob Dylan song. “It gave me the opportunity to sing like Johnny Cash and play guitar like the young Peter Green”, jokes Hackett. “I expect diehard prog fans may hate it but their sweethearts will get it - this story of a bad boy that women can’t shake off...” The interpretation builds a bridge between dark Americana and Irish folk, as only Steve Hackett could. “Down Street”, running at over seven minutes is the longest track on “Orchids”, conveying a menacing but enticing mood with its spoken, Zappa-esque vocals, accordion and fairground sounds, while “To A Close”, with its dreamy, enchanting vocal harmonies, sounds unreal and melancholic. Like several of the new songs, it alludes both to some of Hackett’s memorable solo albums and his work on Genesis classics such as “Wind & Wuthering” and “A Trick Of the Tail”. Fans will be enthusiastic. “Let’s not lose touch with the fairy in the search for the toughest robot”, says Hackett with a twinkle. “The best stories include both”.
