The Apocalypse Blues Revue is back with their sophomore album, The Shape Of Blues To Come.
As the legend goes, Robert Johnson infamously started his career by meeting the Devil at the crossroads. By the same token, you could say The Apocalypse Blues Revue began playing at the end of the world. Co-founded by Godsmack drummer Shannon Larkin and guitarist Tony Rombola and featuring vocalist Ray “Rafer John” Cerbone and bassist Brian Carpenter (Ricky Medlocke’s Blackfoot), the quartet honors blues traditions, while etching their stamp on the genre in blood.
The Shape Of Blues To Come is that rarest of beasts, a second album that is not just better than their first, but one that defines what the band is at this point, and one that points directly to where the band is going. This is not just a side project, this is a band that exists separately from guitarist Tom Rumbola and drummer Shannon Larkin’s huge success with Godsmack, this is a band that will be making music for years to come.
Lead vocalist Ray “Rafer John” Cerbone has made the transition from acoustic blues troubadour to classic blues rock front-man status, and his unique voice and phrasing is given superb treatment by producer Dave Fortman (Godsmack, Evanescence, Anthrax). In terms of tone, timbre, and delivery, Cerbone evokes a somewhat shamanistic vision of where Jim Morrison (and The Doors) may have ended up had he been able to stick around.
