- REL DATE: 27 OCTOBER [!]
Noise Records continue their re-issues with the British heavy metal band Skyclad notable for their heavy folk influences and considered one of the pioneers of folk metal genre.
The etymology behind the term “skyclad” comes from a pagan/wiccan term for ritual nudity, in which rituals are performed with the participants metaphorically clad only by the sky, as a sign of equality. The name alludes both to the band’s religious leanings and to their social beliefs, as set out in the song “Skyclad” on their first album.
The Wayward Sons Of Mother Earth – 1LP & 1CD
Skyclad’s 1991 debut album affirmed them as one of the key pioneers of folk metal upon its release and although its closer to the thrash roots of vocalists Martin Walkyier’s previous outfit Sabbat in its approach, it was the experimentation with violins and keyboards on songs like the standout track ‘The Widdershins Jig’ that would define the bands later offerings. This album clearly demonstrates the band’s capabilities of creating something unique in heavy metal history and is considered a benchmark in folk metal circles.
