Ronnie Baker Brooks, the exciting Chicago musician whose fiery guitar playing and soulful singing make him today’s premier torchbearer of the urban blues tradition, will release his fourth album Times Have Changed through Provogue on January 20.
As the son of blues great Lonnie Brooks, Ronnie came of age as a witness to the Chicago blues scene in all its glory and struggle. “I grew up among the best of the best,” he recalls. “Every time I play, I feel like I've got to do it with the authenticity and passion that I saw in guys like Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, B.B. King and my father. But I also have to put my twist on it: None of those guys repeated what came before them.”
In early 2013, Ronnie Baker Brooks took a giant creative step forward when he traveled to the late Willie Mitchell’s fabled Royal Studios in Memphis to record his newest album Times Have Changed. There he recorded a clutch of new songs with producer/drummer Steve Jordan (Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, John Mayer, Robert Cray), the Memphis Horns, and the mighty Hi Rhythm section including guitarist Michael Toles and the celebrated Hodges brothers – Teenie, Leroy, and Charles. The sessions also featured performances by musical friends like Angie Stone, Al Kapone, Big Head Todd and the legendary Bobby “Blue” Bland.
Ronnie Baker Brooks sees a new vitality being brought to the blues tradition through the music of African-American artists like himself and Shemekia Copeland. He’s convinced that, with the proper exposure, this music would be considered as relevant and as powerful as the latest hits by Kanye West or Beyoncé.
