Spawned in Germany during 1984, KMFDM pioneered the crossover between techno/dance and heavy metal with their signature industrial sound. Moving to Chicago in the mid-80's KMFDM was the pride of Wax Trax Records during the label’s peak. Rapidly evolving year by year through intense experimentation and touring; the band has redefined themselves with each new release.
Helmed by the dual vocal attack of the band’s founder Sascha and siren Lucia KMFDM celebrated 20 years of musical excellence by performing 62 shows in the US, Canada, Europe and Australia in 2004. In 2005 they embarked on a World Tour of 18 countries in support of their full length CD "Hau Ruck". 2006 saw the release of the release of the remix EP titled "Ruck Zuck" and the "Hau Ruck Zuck USSA Tour". 2007 brought "Tohuvabohu", featuring a grand mixture of the band’s many styles. In 2008 the band, now relocated to hometown Hamburg, Germany released their first full blown remix album ever, "Brimborium".
KMFDM remain a musical entity to be reckoned with. Through relentless musical exploration and reinvention they have continued to top themselves. The band’s 2009 release, "Blitz", was no exception. Celebrating their 25th Anniversary the "Kein Mitleid Tour" 2009 took Europe by storm, hitting a number of festival and headlining dates across twelve countries, then making their way back to the US and Canada performing 32 headlining shows.
In 2010 the band released "Krieg", featuring remixes of tracks from "Blitz" by top names across the musical spectrum. This summer the "Fur Die Mehrheit European Tour" have found the band playing 18 shows across 10 countries in another mix of festival dates and headlining gigs. After that KMFDM unveil their "Wurst" / "Greatest Shit" collection, a compendium of their best known tracks on CD / Double-CD and announced a new studio album for 2011. In advance they will release the single "Krank" in March 2011 as their first single in 9 years and perfect taster for the forthcoming album material.
Industrial-metal legends KMFDM has been released their new album, KUNST, on February 26. KMFDM main man Sascha Konietzko has this to say about the album:
“Inspiration is everywhere. Unless one lives in a sequestered environment, the bombardment of inspiration is inescapable. KUNST, like every other KMFDM album to this point, is in a way both a mirror of what inspired us during the process of writing and composing it, as well as a snapshot of where the band was in it’s own timeline. Even though the direct translation of the german word ‘Kunst’ is ‘art’, ‘Kunst’ has a broader meaning for Germans, and Europeans in general, than ‘art’ has for native English speakers. Especially since the early 20th century, art has been politically instrumentalized, for example in propaganda of ultra-right and hard-left movements. Many ‘degenerate’ artists have been sent to concentration camps to be systematically murdered under the Nazi-terror regime, sent to labor, starve, and die in the Siberian GULAG under Stalin, as well as, most recently, imprisoned in Putin’s Russia. Art, and KUNST, are closely tied to aspects of danger, of upheaval and underground rumblings.”
