It’s often said that to get anywhere in life, it’s almost inevitably not what you know rather who you know that helps you achieve your goals. In which case you’d expect Jason Bonham, son of the late, legendary Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, to have had one hell of a rock’n’roll ride. And yet, despite his current fame from sitting in with his father’s old band mates at Led Zeppelin’s astonishing reunion show at London’s O2 Arena last November (quite frankly it would have been a travesty had anyone else filled the drum stool), and indeed his name being linked to every alleged ‘Zep To Tour’ news story appearing almost daily, Jason Bonham’s story is one that, whilst tainted with the tragedy of his late father’s untimely death on 25 November 1980, also appeared to suffer during his early forays out from under his father’s immense shadow and into the rock world at large.
Perhaps it was a case of jealousy that meant that the young Bonham seemed to have to work twice as hard as the next guy to get a break or to be taken seriously. He was, after all, rock royalty. And yet, perhaps fired on by the memory of his father, that has instilled into Jason Bonham a never-ending belief in his enviable skills as a drummer. Bonham, the band he formed in 1989, and whose debut album ‘The Disregard Of Timekeeping’ this is, was Jason Bonham’s first truly big shot at major success in his own right. That he persevered following the subsequent failure of Bonham’s second album, ‘The Mad Hatter’ and more recently has found the success he has deserved following stints with The Quireboys, UFO and Foreigner, is testament to this down-to-earth, friendly and most measured of drummers.
