“Bad English, at its core, rocked hard and we had some wild times around the globe,” says bassist Ricky Phillips. “I have great respect for the musicianship everyone in that band. Right or wrong, everyone forged his own musical style… And that’s rock’n’roll. When it worked it was pretty amazing.”

Apt words those. For Bad English, the melodic rock supergroup formed of members of Journey and The Babys in 1988, would rise, conquer and ultimately fall, for a myriad of reasons all hidden within Phillips’ words. Their rise, with this 1989 debut was swift and understandable. Their demise came less than two years later, amidst bitter recriminations, as so often seems to be the case when one amasses such a group of vibrant, not to mention volatile talent.

The talent on offer in Bad English was indeed the cream of the AOR and melodic rock scene at the time. Two members had played in Journey, possibly the greatest US AOR band ever. A further three had all been in The Babys, a UK band that found most fame in America throughout the ‘70s before disbanding at the tail end of 1980. And drummer Deen Castronovo, a relative unknown when Bad English formed – he’d drummed for guitar virtuoso act Cacophony in the ‘80s – would end up forming a solid working partnership with guitarist Neal Schon in the years that would follow Bad English.
