Alvin Lee was born on December 19, 1944 in Nottingham, England and began his career playing with the Jaybirds, a beat group popular in both Germany and the UK during the early Sixties. In 1966 the group's line up was expanded and they took on the name Ten Years After.
The group staged its break through at London's Marquee Club in 1967 and quickly became established as one of the finest blues rock groups of the era, regularly performing at festivals and clubs, where Alvin's high speed guitar solos and scat singing on 'I'm Goin' Home' became hugely popular. Their success was capped by an historic appearance at the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and the group's act proved one of the most exciting in the all-star 'Woodstock' movie.
After the original group broke up Alvin released a series of fine solo albums, all now available on Repertoire including 'On The Road To Freedom' (released just before TYA's demise), 'In Flight', 'Pump Iron!' and several more. Alvin continued to tour with such outfits as Ten Years Later, the Alvin Lee Band and a revived TYA. He continues to record new material and make 'live' appearances and is hailed as one of rock's legendary guitar giants.
The guitar maestro in cracking form on this hard rocking but richly varied album, which was Alvin's first studio set after the break up of group Ten Years After. After many years on the road, he was in a mood to find freedom and work out with new musical mates, and as a result 'Pump Iron' is packed with fine performances. It was made at Alvin's home studio in 1975 with keyboard player Tim Hinkley.
