They are one of the most influential hardcore bands of all time. Long before the term metalcore was invented, SHAI HULUD had already set the blueprint and successfully applied it. Back then there were four bands everybody was copying: THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, CONVERGE, POISON THE WELL and SHAI HULUD, whose 1997 debut EP “A Profound Hatred Of Man” is one of the biggest classics of the whole hardcore scene. In 2008 they are back after a five-year hiatus, but don’t call this a comeback. It’s an emergence from a hibernation that included plenty of activity; tours outside of the USA, line-up changes, side projects and the writing of new songs.

“Misanthropy Pure” more than lives up to its title, serving as a release for all those who hate our society and the stupidity of the current generation. SHAI HULUD is thinking man’s music, tackling subjects that dare to question everything and everyone. Comments founding member and guitarist Matt Fox: “The way man conducts himself is not conducive of progression. We write about people we see and think suck.”

Musically, the album combines hardcore, thrash, punk and metal, and siphons influence from diverse sources, ranging from METALLICA to BURN to TESTAMENT to DEAD KENNEDYS to CIRCLE JERKS. “It’s like that movie Deep Blue Sea,” Fox says. “The tagline on the DVD box is ‘Bigger. Faster. Smarter. Meaner.’ That’s how this record is.”

“Misanthropy Pure” is a misanthropic statement against the reigning stupidity, a statement from a true legend of the hardcore scene that hasn’t lost any of its bite, passion and awareness over the years.
