BIO: Slowly building up a ground roots following for itself, Milanese outfit LACUNA COIL was founded in 1994, although then known as SLEEP OF RIGHT. In this early guise the group recorded 'Bleeding Souls', which saw release in 1995 on the 'Noise Of Bolgia' compilation album. The band has steadily risen with a series of commendably strong albums into a premier act of the genre, widely tipped for greater status. In recent years LACUNA COIL, blessed with the photogenic Cristina Scabbia, have made serious headway into the European Rock market.
Cristina Scabbia had previously been employed as a session singer, first meeting male vocalist Andrea Ferro and bass player Marco Coti Zelati in Milan's Midnight club. The band operated under a revised name of ETHEREAL prior to adopting LACUNA COIL, adopting this title as an allegory for "empty spiral". Line-up changes saw the band reduced to a trio of Scabbia, Ferro and Coti Zelati. A resulting two track demo in May 1996 inspired a deal with Germany's Century Media label.
Upon the release of the debut mini-album, produced by GRIP INC.'s Waldemar Sorychta, LACUNA COIL were tagged unkindly as "Gothic Doom Bon Jovi with female vocals"! The band themselves describe their music as 'Darkly dreamy'! Prior to the album being made available the band was promoted by a December 1997 support tour in Europe to Portuguese act MOONSPELL. However, just three gigs into the run Zagaria, Claudio Leo and Leonardo Forti decamped en masse. Undaunted LACUNA COIL persevered pulling in Anders Iwers from TIAMAT and CEMETARY on guitar and Markus of KREATOR on drums.
The band regrouped in January of 1998 by enlisting THY NATURE's Cristiano Migliore on guitar and TIME MACHINE's Cristiano Mozzati on drums. This revised formation embarked on European touring throughout April in alliance with THE GATHERING and SIEGMEN. Additional personnel utilised for live work would be NODE's Steve Minelli on guitar and keyboard player Alice Chiarelli.
LACUNA COIL put in an inaugural showing at the August 1998 German Wacken festival before gearing up for recording of the 'In A Reverie' album. As 1999 opened the band was brought up to strength with the addition of guitarist Marco Biazzi and soon after engaged in European mainland touring once more in alliance with England's SKYCLAD. On the back of these gigs LACUNA COIL jumped onboard the May 'Into The Darkness' package alongside running mates SAMAEL, MY INSANITY and GRIP INC. Returning to their homeland the act put in a showing at the 'Gods Of Metal' festival headlined by METALLICA. Before the year was out a further schedule was put in place as the band guested for LACRIMOSA in Germany during October. These dates would be marred when Biazzi broke some ribs when falling down stairs.
The millennium witnessed LACUNA COIL back in action with the 'Halflife' EP, a collection that oddly included a DUB STAR cover version. The band's status was such now that a series of headline shows in Europe was undertaken in April. The group would perform for the first time in Mexico during December and as the new year broke would hook up with THEATRE OF TRAGEDY and BESEECH for a further round of European dates. This activity was capitalised on by their inclusion in the high profile March 'Metal Odyssey' touring package of DIMMU BORGIR, NEVERMORE, IN FLAMES and SUSPERIA. May would see headline gigs back in Italy.
During 2001 a Gothic Metal band CAYNE was forged by LACUNA COIL founding guitarists Claudio Leo and Raffaele Zagaria. An inaugural album 'Old Faded Pictures' saw a November release through Scarlet Records. The band would act as guests for MOONSPELL's December American tour.
During late 2001 live keyboard player Alice Chiarelli announced a new Doom Metal band project ALICE IN DARKLAND, issuing 'The Evil's Entrails' album Nocturnal Music in March of 2002. LACUNA COIL themselves announced a month's worth of North American dates commencing in San Francisco on September 16th backing up headliners IN FLAMES and SENTENCED with support from KILLSWITCH ENGAGE. However, with the release date for a new studio album entitled 'Comalies' being pushed back the band later withdrew from these shows. An extensive European tour scheduled as guests to SENTENCED would take the band through October. 'Comalies' arrival, preceded by the single 'Heaven's A Lie', did much to entrench the band as one of the leading lights on the post Gothic Rock scene. The band announced North American tour dates for January 2003, billed as the '4 Absent Friends Tour', allied with OPETH, PARADISE LOST and TAPPING THE VEIN. Unfortunately though the band was forced to drop out of these gigs due to visa difficulties. As the promotional video for 'Heaven's A Lie' was on the end of major TV rotation in Germany LACUNA COIL's European headline gigs in December saw the band topping a bill comprising MOONSPELL, PASSENGER and POISONBLACK. The band put in an extensive run of headline Italian dates in March and April of 2004 as 'Heaven's A Lie' dominated Italian radio.
Returning to North America the band, seeing US sales of 'Comalies' now past the 60,000 mark, formed up a touring package alongside headliners P.O.D. and fellow support acts Sweden's BLINDSIDE and Hardcore "all star" act HAZEN STREET commencing 1st May in Denver, Colorado. A new single, 'Swamped' also featured on the soundtrack to the movie 'Resident Evil: Apocalypse (RE2)', would be launched to coincide. LACUNA COIL then joined the ranks of the roving 'Ozzfest' extravaganza through July / August, sharing the second stage alongside headline act SLIPKNOT and fellow supports UNEARTH, LAMB OF GOD, EVERY TIME I DIE, HATEBREED, ATREYU and BLEEDING THROUGH. To commemerate this achievement the 'Comalies' album would be re-issued as a special 'Ozzfest' two disc set adding acoustic renditions, live performances, radio edits and videos for both 'Heaven's A Lie' and 'Swamped'.
In July it would be revealed that not only had 'Comalies' passed the 100,000 sales mark in the USA but they had become Century Media's top selling artist to date and the highest selling Italian Rock act. This momentum would push the album into the Billboard charts in July, hitting no. 194 by selling 5,818 copies that week. Not only would this be LACUNA COIL's Billboard debut but also that for label Century Media. With promotion for 'Comalies' finally at a close the band returned to Italy. Cristina Scabbia almost immediately found herself back in the recording studio though, duetting with famous Itailian singer Franco Battiato on the song 'I'm That' on his album 'Dieci Stratagemmi' released through Sony Records.
November found the band in Milan working on pre-production with producer Waldemar Sorychta. The group closed out the year with a special performance on 27th December at the Carling Apollo Hammersmith in London alongside IN FLAMES, CALIBAN and CHIMAIRA. Century Media capped 2004 by announcing that not only was 'Comalies' the label's best selling record to date, selling nearly 150,000 copies in the U.S. over the previous twelve months, but that the album had broken all sales records for the company. By March of 2005 'Comalies' had surpassed the 200,000 sales marker.
A 2005 compilation inclusion of note would be the track 'Swamped' featured on the 'Code Red' album, an exclusive collection given to US Marine Corps soldiers active duty in the Middle East. October found the band headlining the Belgian 'Female Metal Voices III' festival alongside a cast comprising THE LEGION OF HETHERIA, LEAVES' EYES, EPICA, ELIS, MIDNATTSOL, SKEPTICAL MINDS, MERCURY RAIN, ASRAI, AUTUMN, DILUVIUM and AFTER FOREVER. The track 'Daylight Dancer' gave the band a good degree of extra exposure when it was included on the soundtrack to the Bruce Hunt directed movie 'The Cave', released in August.
New album 'Karmacode', produced by Waldemar Sorychta and released by Century Media Records in April 2006, featured a cover of the DEPECHE MODE track 'Enjoy The Silence'. Upon release, the band engaged in a series of major city acoustic performances and in-store signings across the USA. 'Karmacode' shifted 34,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at number 28 on the Billboard charts.
LACUNA COIL announced US touring plans supporting ROB ZOMBIE in April to coincide. Heightening their exposure further, the LACUNA COIL's track 'The Ghost Woman And The Hunter' was included on the soundtrack to the X-Men III' movie.
The band put in a significant appearance at the GUNS N' ROSES headlined 'Download' festival in Castle Donington, UK on June 11th. 'Ozzfest' once again loomed for the 2006 summer touring season, the group sharing the festival stages with OZZY OSBOURNE, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, HATEBREED, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, DISTURBED, ATREYU, UNEARTH, BLEEDING THROUGH, NORMA JEAN, A LIFE ONCE LOST, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, THE RED CHORD, FULL BLOWN CHAOS, WALLS OF JERICHO, ALL THAT REMAINS and BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME.
