Two years after GORGUTS released their debut album Considered Dead, interest in death metal was beginning to wane, and the band were steps ahead of many by realizing that their next effort had better be something to write home about. Locked away in rehearsals for what I assume were several months, GORGUTS started composing tracks for their sophomore effort, The Erosion of Sanity. The eventual result was an album that is commonly hailed by fans and bands as one of the best death metal records of all time.

The eight track, 37 minute masterpiece is the product of nothing less than a passion-driven band intent on enhancing every possible creative element that they possessed. The I.Q. of the lyrical subject matter skyrocketed, the guitar riffs and arrangements became more complex, and the production was much clearer and heavier. GORGUTS became a band so tight that a crowbar could not budge them. Classics like “Hideous Infirmity”, “A Path Beyond Premonition”, “Condemned To Obscurity” and the title track were chock full of insanely technical riffs that proved their abilities as a unit. But for some, it made for more difficult listening compared to the material on Considered Dead. Many fans, including myself, were blown away but confused by the initial listen... it was way too much to take in. But like many classic metal records, repeated spins caused the album to grow on us like a musical tumor and The Erosion of Sanity ultimately outsold its predecessor.
