MINDGRINDER, initially billed as MENTAL GARROTER, was established during 1996 as a triumvirate of vocalist / guitarist Cosmocrator, guitarist Nitrous and guitarist / vocalist Titan. Demos included 'Demolition' in 2001 and 'Feeding The Imbeciles' the following year. MINDGRINDER's Cosmocrator established a reputation as member of both SOURCE OF TIDE, as keyboard player, and bass player for ZYKLON, the side venture of EMPEROR members Samoth and Trym. Cosmocrator also sessioned as vocalist for WINDIR's 2002 album '1184'.

During 2003 Cosmocrator aided in forming SCUM, a high profile collaboration of extreme Metal elite players comprising Casey Chaos of US band AMEN and Norwegians Samoth of ZYKLON, and ex-EMPEROR, former EMPEROR and THORNS drummer Bеrd 'Faust' Eithun and bassist Happy Tom from TURBONEGRO.

Before signing to the Portuguese Sound Riot label for a projected 2003 album release MINDGRINDER issued a brace of demos, 'Demolition' and 'Bless The Imbeciles!', as well as having material featured on the compilation album 'Svartmetal'. Cosmocrator would also act as session drummer for DISIPLIN's 'The DeathRite Sessions' EP.

The band was restructured in January of 2004 as Cosmocrator relinquished his SOURCE OF TIDE ties in order to prioritise MINDGRINDER and the band also bade farewell to the drum computer and welcomed in Dan as drummer. The band also severed their partnership with Sound Riot, signing a new deal with Nocturnal Art Productions, the label owned by Samoth of ZYKLON. A debut album 'MindTech' would be scheduled for April.

In June of 2004 Cosmocrator, working with both Samoth and Trym of ZYKLON and Invictus from DISIPLIN, participated in recordings for a WINDIR tribute album to honour the memory of the late Valfar. In November MINDGRINDER entered Akkerhaugen Lydstudios to craft their second album for Nocturnal Art Productions. Early 2005 saw the introduction of the EVILIZER and DISIPLIN credited Nex on drums.
