2026 marks 10 years since the release of the seminal album Magma.

As early as November 2014, the band began setting up its own studio in the New York borough of Queens: Silver Cord Studio. Once it was completed in early 2015, Gojira began writing and recording the new album. However, the process was interrupted for some time due to a death in the families of singer Joe and drummer Mario Duplantier. They finally completed the recording and mixing in early 2016.

The result is a ten-song album titled “Magma,” from which Gojira has already released two singles: “Stranded” and “Silvera.” Both songs clearly demonstrate the overall tone of the new album: progressive death metal, which this time around is a bit less epic than on previous albums, but a touch edgier. The riffs are as heavy as ever, but Joe Duplantier’s vocals often sound surprisingly clean by Gojira standards. The songs have become shorter overall.

But none of that changes the fact that you can clearly hear who’s behind this new album.
