The latest lineup of Sleep featuring founding member and primary songwriter Al Cisneros presents itself as a genre-defying master of stoner metal, now joined by the exceptionally talented Dale Crover (Melvins, Redd Kross) on drums and the iconoclastic Bubba Dupree (Void) on guitar. While simpler minds may seek the redundancy of a monotonous, repetitive exercise, the trajectory of the new album, *Hempispheres*, is an exploratory vision that replaces overload with nuance and subtlety while still preserving the interplay that has made the band so special from the very beginning. So while discussions on forums and in comment sections lament the amicable departure of longtime guitarist Matt Pike, true fans, visionaries, and open-minded seekers of truth are rewarded in equal measure not with the Sleep album they expected or hoped for, but with *Hempispheres* as the album that is needed right now.
