Good news from Sweden’s supersonic guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen: Unleash The Fury, the latest album release by the Miami resident, is yet another lesson for budding guitar heroes and at the same time compositionally one of the strongest offerings in his career to date. His most important partner is British vocalist Dougie White (ex-Rainbow, Cornerstone), who, like drummer Patrick Johansson, has been a constant part of Malmsteen’s band since the predecessor album, Attack. Keyboarder Joakim Svalberg is the latest addition, replacing Derek Sherinian (ex- Dream Theater).
Malmsteen’s speedy guitar continues to resemble a pyrotechnical spectacle consisting of scales, quintuplets and arpeggios. This exceptional guitarist performs a metal guitar style featuring classical quotations and intricate gimmicks that leave fans of the genre gasping. Wild up-tempo tracks like ‘Locked & Loaded’ or ‘Cracking The Whip’ stand alongside anthemnic numbers like ‘Russian Roulette’ and ‘Unleash The Fury’. ‘Cherokee Warrior’ (incidentally sung by Malmsteen himself!) is his best ballad since the fascinating ‘Dreaming (Tell Me)’ from his Odyssey album. Unleash The Fury is rounded off by ‘The Bogeyman’ (“its riff will stay in your memory”) and ‘Revelation (Drinking With The Devil)’, a sort of musical coming-to-terms-with-the-past, which Malmsteen describes as “particularly intense and personal”.
Malmsteen’s 15th studio release to date features a total of 18 brand-new tracks, among them the four instrumentals, ‘Fuguetta’, ‘Guardian Angel’, ‘Magic And Mayhem’ (bringing back memories of Al Di Meola’s ‘Race With Devil On Spanish Highway’) and ‘Paraphrase’. The album was mixed and produced by Mike Fraser (AC/DC, Metallica, Van Halen, Aerosmith) and Malmsteen himself. The unusual cover artwork is further proof of Malmsteen’s independence. “I wanted something simple to reflect the album’s energy,” he explains, adding with a wink: “People will either love or hate the artwork.”
