A hard edged Progressive Rock act. THRESHOLD was formed in Southern England during 1988 by guitarists Nick Midson and Karl Groom together with drummer Tony Grinham. THRESHOLD added bassist Jon Jeary, vocalist DAMIAN WILSON and keyboard player Richard West in 1991. Guitarist Karl Groom also doubles as guitarist for SHADOWLANDS.
Wilson had appeared as guest lead vocalist on LANDMARQ's 1992 'Solitary Witness' album, co-produced by Groom. However, Wilson later quit THRESHOLD following recording of the first album, 1993's 'Wounded Land', his name being connected to the then vacant vocal position with IRON MAIDEN. Wilson subsequently added vocals to another LANDMARQ album 'The Vision Pit' before he settled with American act LA SALLE. Wilson also issued a solo album 'Cosmas' in 1997.
Touring in Europe during January of 1994 saw support from Norwegian act CONCEPTION. Prior to the recording of the second album, 1995's 'Psychedelicatessen', the group lost the services of Grinham. Nevertheless, THRESHOLD appeared at a prestigious Belgian open air festival on a bill including PARADISE LOST, TYKETTO, GOTTHARD and WHITESNAKE. 'Psychadelicatessen', featured new vocalist Glynn Morgan, previously having worked with G//Z/R guitarist Pedro Howse, and whilst SHADOWLAND drummer Nick Harradence had joined the group prior to recording his stay was a temporary one, his live tenure being fulfilled by a solitary concert before the drum stool had been filled by Jay Micciche. THRESHOLD then undertook dates supporting DREAM THEATER. During 1995 a five track live album, 'Livedelica', emerged before work on the 'Extinct Instinct' commenced.
Following his (unsuccessful) liaison with LA SALLE Damien Wilson returned alongside new drummer Mark Heaney as vocalist Glynn Morgan opted out to create MINDFEED, in collusion with Jay Miccichie on drums. The pair released the 'Perfect Life?' album in 1998. By 2000 Micciche had joined Kent Nu-Metallers VACANT STARE and also deputized for KILL II THIS. 2004 found Morgan fronting THE NEW BLACKS.
By 1999 THRESHOLD were fronted by ex-SARGENT FURY vocalist Andy 'Macc' McDermott and on tn the drumstool was Janne James. An interim set of remixes and rare material surfaced entitled 'Decadent'. A brand new studiuo album entitled 'Clone' was taken on the road across Europe early in 1999. Able support came courtesy of PAIN OF SALVATION and ELDRITCH, the band culminating these dates with an appearance at the 'Wacken Open Air' festival in Germany. Following the commercial success of the 'Clone' album, THRESHOLD moved to a larger record label Inside Out Music, resulting in increased global exposure for the 'Hypothetical' album. A further run of European dates found Birmingham's ARK as guests. The last night of the tour was duly recorded for a second fan club CD suitably entitled 'Concert In Paris'. McDermott also began work on his debut solo album 'In The Meantime' working his ex-SARGENT FURY colleague bassist Carsten Rebentisch and SAXON guitarist Paul Quinn. Groom took time out to produce the new album for fellow British Progsters PENDRAGON.
THRESHOLD, promoting their biggest selling record to date in the 'Critical Mass' album, would put in an appearance at the UK 'Bloodstock' festival and headline the first 'ProgPower Europe' festival in October 2002. The band would also appear at the US 'Progpower' event.
THRESHOLD's third fan club album, 'Wireless', was recorded at the beginning of 2003 and hosted acoustic renditionss of back-catalogue tracks alongside two previously unreleased songs written before THRESHOLD signed their first recording contract, 'Conceal The Face' and 'Seventh Angel'. With Jon Jeary's exit, Karl Groom assumed bass duties for these sessions.
Bassist Steve Anderson was installed for tour work during 2003 for the 'Critical Energy' release. Utilising Thin Ice Studios once again, THRESHOLD cut a new album entitled 'Subsurface' for 2004 issue, promoting this with September European gigs allied with DEAD SOUL TRIBE. 'Subsurface' entered the national German charts at no. 66. McDermott was announced as fronting YARGOS, a Progressive Metal collaboration between well known figures on the European Metal scene involving guitarist Wieland Hofmeister, second guitarist Andreas Kienitz of HYDROTOXIN and HUMAN FORTRESS, RUNNING WILD bassist Peter Pichl and MOONDOG drummer Ossy Pfieffer. Additional vocals came courtesy of Anca Graterol. The album 'To Be Or Not To Be' emerged in 2005 through AFM Records.
Early 2005 saw Karl Groom manning the production chair once again for Power Metal bands POWER QUEST, INTENSE and DRAGONFORCE. Groom also initiated side project band FARRAH WEST. Meantime, THRESHOLD keyboard player Richard West helped formulate a "Progressive supergroup" headed up by guitarist MICHAEL HARRIS with ENCHANT's lead vocalist Ted Leonard plus Rob Stankiewicz and Derek Blakely from HAJI'S KITCHEN. He would also session on the debut album by BEYOND THE LABYRINTH. THRESHOLD issued a live album in 2006, 'Surface To Stage' being recorded at the Z7 venue in Pratteln, Switzerland.
