Infamous Scottish anti-establishment Punk outfit created in East Kilbride during 1979, the Mohican sporting EXPLOITED benefited greatly from the early 80s Punk resurgence and looked set to come into favour again as America rediscovered Punk once more. The band formed with a line-up of vocalist Wattie Buchanan, guitarist 'Big' John Duncan, ex-JOSEF K bassist Gary McCormick and drummer Dru Stix (a.k.a. Glen Campbell). THE EXPLOITED released their first three singles 'Army Life', 'Exploited Barmy Army' and the Live EP on their own label prior to their reissue on Secret Records the following year.
THE EXPLOITED scored both hit singles and albums in the early 80s and maintained a stable line-up until 1982. At their height the band sold out the Rainbow Theatre in London and headlined the 'Apocalypse Now' British tour above DISCHARGE, CHRON GEN and ANTI PASTI.
Following the 'Troops Of Tomorrow' album Duncan left to form BLOOD UNCLES and was superseded by ex-SKROTEEZ man Billy Dunn. Duncan was to later join the experimental Hard Pop band GOODBYE MR. McKENZIE that would evolve into ANGELFISH in 1990 (both fronted by Shirley Manson, later to find fame with GARBAGE). Duncan also began a second career as a guitar roadie for NIRVANA and would actually enjoy a spell as a second guitarist in the band for a period
In 1983 THE EXPLOITED added new members Wayne, Egghead and guitarist Captain Skarlett. By the end of the year though THE EXPLOITED split apart once more as McCormick departed to form ZULU SYNDICATE and in came guitarist Deptford John and bassist Mad Mick.
Founder member Stix also left the ranks after a well publicized addiction to drugs. The drummer eventually was sentenced to seven years for armed robbery.
THE EXPLOITED signed to Music For Nations offshoot label Rough Justice in the late 80s but by this time only Wattie remained. The remainder of the band comprised of guitarist Gogs, bassist Smeg and drummer Tony. A further more recent line-up saw Wattie complemented by guitarist Arthur, bassist Billy and drummer Wullie.
THE EXPLOITED saw renewed interest for their 1996 'Beat The Bastards' album with Punk on the ascendancy once more in Europe. The band was still active in 2000 appearing at European Metal festivals. Another lengthy hiatus then ensued before word arrived that a new studio album 'Fuck The System' was set for January 2003 release through the Dream Catcher label.
