One of the mightiest and influential forces on the worldwide AOR scene. Although the common belief is that TOTO was founded by a bunch of seasoned session players, the truth was that although the individuals concerned had a wealth of studio experience they had worked together mainly as a band unit backing other artists on the road. The nucleus of what would become TOTO comprised keyboard player David Paich and drummer Jeff Porcaro. The pair had played together in a high school band by the name of RURAL STILL LIFE, this title taken from Jazz man TOM SCOTT's album of the same name. Amongst the high profile playing credits Porcaro in particular would gain over the next few years would be percussion work on TOMMY BOLIN's 1974 album 'Teaser'. Both he and Paich also played for BOZ SCAGGS.

The first TOTO demo had been started as a duo, prior to guitarist STEVE LUKATHER and bassist David Hungate augmenting the line-up as recording progressed. Two tracks, 'Miss Sun' and 'Love Is A Man's World', were laid down before vocalist BOBBY KIMBALL , previously with Louisiana's THE LEVEE BAND and Los Angeles outfit S.S. FOOLS, was inducted into the fold.

The origins of the name were, in truth, far simpler than some of the stories that have suggested. Both Jeff Porcaro and David Paich were looking for a simple name, leaning toward something kids would be easy to spell. TOTO was suggested by Porcaro and put on demo cassettes. It wasn't intended to be the group's permanent name, but once Columbia Records signed the band in 1977 the group was persuaded to stick with it.

TOTO's self-titled first album, released in 1978, spawned the guitar driven transatlantic hit 'Hold The Line'. The single hit the British top 20 and in the States went top 5, although similar success with singles would elude the group for a number of years. Nevertheless, 'Georgy Porgy' would garner the band further valuable radio play and soon established itself as a concert staple. In outside activities that same year, Lukather contributed guitar to the eponymous solo album from KISS drummer PETER CRISS, a liaison he would re-inforce by appearing on Criss's next two records also.

The second TOTO album, 1979's 'Hydra', was a loosely conceptual affair and significantly heavier than the debut, Lukather letting rip in no small fashion. Whilst the debut album had been the group's bait to the industry to gain commercial interest, the band were collectively into heavier material. David Paich's mother had recently passed away and this led to the man adding an extremely darker hue to his songwriting.

Although the album was enthusiastically greeted by Hard Rock fans, the album failed to produce a single as successful as 'Hold The Line', although the laid back '99' did make a minor dent in the American charts.

Before work began on album number three, Jeff Porcaro produced the self titled 1980 album by THE STRAND. Inevitably, the group suffered from TOTO comparisons and quickly disappeared. The record is, however, extremely underrated. The same year Hungate would session on the debut album from BRYAN ADAMS and U.S. Hard Rockers THUNDER.

1981's 'Turn Back' found TOTO going through a period that Paich describes as being heavily inspired by the work of QUEEN, even to the point of getting the British group's engineer Geoff Workman involved in the making of the album.

influenced at the songwriting stage by Freddie Mercury, was looking to explore the Pomp Rock angle and the band in general aimed to be writing more with a lavish stage show in mind than merely a studio record. Unfortunately, the album flopped.

TOTO regrouped the following year to cut the stabilising 'Toto IV'. With the record label very apprehensive that the group could deliver another hit like 'Hold The Line' TOTO knew that their record deal was riding on the success or failure of the new album. TOTO promptly put the bit between their teeth and set out to record the best, mainstream oriented record they could make. It was sink or swim.

Thankfully for TOTO the fourth album saw the Los Angeles based act back on top, the album spawning two huge hit singles in 'Rosanna' (written by Lukather in honour of his then girlfriend, actress Rosanna Arquette) and 'Africa'. Whereas the former reached number 2 in the American singles chart, held at bay by HUMAN LEAGUE's 'Don't You Want Me' and then SURVIVOR's seminal Rock anthem 'Eye Of The Tiger', 'Africa' hit the top spot.

By late 1982 the Porcoro kinship within the band strengthened as Hungate made way for Mike Porcaro. The younger brother of Jeff and Steve, Mike had played with the group back in the earliest days but had to make way for Hungate when the group hit the road as the youngest Porcaro was still in high school at the time. As Hungate opted out in order to spend more time with his family, the obvious solution was to draft in Mike in his place.

touring on the back of 'Toto IV's huge world-wide success, the band found themselves searching for a frontman more suited to live performance.

BOBBY KIMBALL left the ranks. He would later turn solo and also contribute to recordings by the German based FAR CORPORATION. By 1987 Kimball had formed MGM with ex WHITESNAKE colleagues guitarist BERNIE MARSDEN and bass player Neil Murray, one-time MARILLION and GTR drummer Jonathan Mover and ex-WHITESNAKE and TRAPEZE guitarist Mel Galley. MGM was, however, short-lived.

Meantime TOTO hooked up with one Dennis 'Fergie' Frederiksen. A former member of TRILLION, ANGEL and LE ROUX, 'Fergie' Frederiksen had impressed his new bandmates with his demo tapes, his image and the way he performed with the group in rehearsals as TOTO attempted to chamealize behind their new frontman.

The resulting 'Isolation' album, was a different matter altogether, highlighting the fact that whilst Frederiksen was a great singer he was not really suited to the role of being the singer in TOTO. This despite the fact that the group had not intended to record a clone of 'Toto IV' despite Columbia's preference for them to do so.

Frederiksen would tour with the group but after a year the two parties split amicably (Frederiksen would even sing back-up on one song on the next record) and TOTO began the hunt for a new singer.

Amongst the many names linked with the position, Paich cites AOR cult hero MAX CARL and San Francisco based ERIC MARTIN as amongst those in contention. The keyboard player wanted Martin (who "jammed real good") in the band, but he was out voted by his colleagues who went for the unknown Joseph Williams.

Having a CV boasting a wealth of soundtrack work and a solo project in the works at the time, Williams joined TOTO in 1985. Whilst Paich had preferred Martin, he still found a fine writing partner in Williams as the pair penned the bulk of the work that would end up on the 'Fahrenheit' album. The pair would also co-write the huge hit 'Pamela', the lead cut on the ensuing 'The Seventh One' album of 1988.

Unfortunately for Williams, the singer found the road tough going. Unlike Paich's preferred choice, Williams proved not to be a 'road puppy', and would leave the group to pursue a less stressful, studio based solo career. Post 'The Seventh One' period found TOTO floundering as Columbia decided to put together a 'greatest hits' style package for 1990 entitled 'Past To Present 1977-1990' that would include some new material originally intended to feature Williams. Without a singer, TOTO briefly worked with BOBBY KIMBALL on some new songs, but things didn't work out.

Some sources claim that the group then worked with Tommy Nelson (formerly with Swedish outfit EASY ACTION), David Paich has claimed this story to be false. The record company suggested that TOTO should try out a South African born singer by the name of Jean-Michel Byron. He was tried out, wrote material with Lukather and recorded some tracks that made it onto the compilation. TOTO were not happy with the situation, believing material that had been recorded with Kimball was better than that which made the record. The liaison with Byron was, in the end, rather brief. Byron departed to create the short-lived, modestly titled BYRON.

With no brand new product immediately on the horizon, STEVE LUKATHER had plugged the gap with his first solo effort, the Hard Rock oriented 'Lukather' in 1989. Despite the album boasting performances from Eddie Van Halen, keyboard wizard Jan Hammer, BILLY IDOL guitarist Steve Stevens, THE TUBES drummer Prairie Prince, session bassist Will Lee and TOTO men Paich and Jeff Porcaro, the album was mysteriously only released in Europe.

Without a frontman TOTO wisely decided that, unless the perfect guy came along, the group would continue with Steve Lukather doubling up on vocals. With this plan of action the group thus set to work on the new album 'Kingdom Of Desire'.

Tragically, one month away from a new world tour, TOTO were rocked with the death of drummer Jeff Porcaro in August 1992. Porcaro had recently worked on records by BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN and DIRE STRAITS, both of whom courted the drummer with offers of vast amounts of money to try to lure him to tour with them. Porcaro remained loyal with TOTO but died suddenly and mysteriously.

The band's manager claimed at the time that the 38 year old drummer had died of a heart attack brought on by an allergic reaction to pesticides used on his lawn. This fable undoubtedly inspired the infamous SPINAL TAP story of a drummer meeting his end by way of a “bizarre gardening accident”. However, in truth the coroner's report found otherwise. The toxicology report discovered no trace of pesticides, but observed levels of cocaine and a by-product of cocaine.

As the 'Absolutely Live' album was released in 1993, the group played a benefit concert for the late drummer's children that included guest appearances from ex BEATLE guitarist GEORGE HARRISON and VAN HALEN guitarist Eddie Van Halen. STEVE LUKATHER meantime got back on track with his solo career issuing 1994's 'Candyman'.

Naturally hit hard by Porcaro's death, TOTO decided to attempt to recruit world renowned drum legend Simon Phillips or else split up. Phillips agreed to join and TOTO returned in 1995 with the 'Tambu' record. This record was an attempt to ease Simon Phillips into the group as smoothly as possible and described by David Paich as a 'Rubber Soul' style album.

TOTO celebrated their 20th anniversary with the release on June 1, 1998 of 'Toto XX', a collection of 13 previously unreleased songs including the two that were TOTO's original demos that would lead to their record deal in 1977. Also included was a nine minute live version of 'Africa' augmented by a traditional 7 piece South African choir. A brand new album was expected to be in the process of being recorded in the Summer of 1998 with a release expected early in the new year.

BOBBY KIMBALL rejoined the band for 1999's 'Mindfields' album and subsequent 'Livefields' concert outing. The group also expanded further with the addition of new member Greg Phillinganes on keyboards. Touring in 2001 found the band as special guests to ERIC CLAPTON in Mexico City during October.

TOTO would be back in the upper reaches of the European charts in 2001 albeit via an unexpected source. DJ ROGER SANCHEZ scored a huge hit on in the clubs with a song heavily reliant on a TOTO sample from 'I Won't Hold You Back'. The track even hit the no. 1 spot in the UK singles charts.

Outside activity for the TOTO members in 2001 included the VANTAGE POINT side project of Simon Phillips and Jeff Babko and another extracurricular live act DOVES OF FIRE made up of Lukather, Phillips, Babko and Melvin Davis. Lukather would also find recognition in the Jazz world with his 'No Substitutions' live album recorded in Osaka, Japan in collaboration with Larry Carlton. The TOTO guitarist would also appear in Holland during July as part of a JIMI HENDRIX tribute festival.

TOTO en masse would grace the ROBIN DIMAGGIO record 'Blue Planet'. Not only did DiMaggio cover 'Africa' but would rope in Paich, Lukather, Phillips and Mike Porcaro to boot. The MARI LIJIMA 2001 album 'Right Now' would also provoke the interest of TOTO fans featuring Lukather, Phillips and Mike Porcaro. BOZ SCAGGS would also figure in the band chronology again with Paich acting as producer on his latest album which would also bear witness to another session from Lukather.

Despite the success of the band, Lukather, Paich, Hungate and Porcaro never ceased working sessions with other artists. Indeed, over the group's twenty year history TOTO members have contributed to literally hundreds of other albums. Lukather, besides a whole catalogue of Pop and Country sessions, has donated his services to artists such as ASIA, AMERICA, CHER, CHICAGO's 'Chicago 16', ERIC CLAPTON, ALICE COOPER's 'Trash', GREG LAKE, PETER FRAMPTON, STEALIN' HORSES, STEVIE NICKS's 'Wild Heart' record and even as studio guitarist and arranger for SPINAL TAP. His presence would also be felt on DEREK SHERINAN's 2001 opus 'Rhapsody In Black'.

TOTO's 2002 album, 'Through The Looking Glass' delivered for new label EMI, would take many fans by surprise by being announced as comprising entirely of cover versions. Included tracks would versions of 'Bohidsatva' by STEELY DAN, 'Could You Be Loved' by BOB MARLEY, 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' by GEORGE HARRISON, 'Maiden Voyage- Butterfly' by HERBIE HANCOCK, 'Burn Down The Mission' by ELTON JOHN, 'Sunshine Of Your Love' by CREAM, 'House Of The Rising Sun' by ERIC BURDON, 'It Takes A Lot To Laugh' and ' A Train To Cry' by BOB DYLAN, 'Watching The Detectives' by ELVIS COSTELLO, 'Can't Get Next To You' by AL GREEN and STEVIE WONDER's 'Livin' For The City'.

A healthy contingent of the TOTO cast, Kimball, Lukather and Phillips, would grace SPOCK'S BEARD's keyboard player RYO OKUMOTO solo record 'Coming Through' issued during October. Former singer Joseph Williams re-emerged in January of 2003 touting a brand new band project entitled VERTIGO.

Summer touring for TOTO in North America saw David Paich temporarily taking leave of absence and Greg Phillinganes filling in. The band appeared at the Tokyo Jazz Festival in September then finished off the year with gigs in Panama and Mexico. The band ushered in 2005 with a short burst of Californian gigs in March prior to South African arena shows in April, held in Durban and Johannesburg, both in performance with the Durban Philharmonic Orchestra. TOTO put in European dates in February and March 2006.

New album recordings, entitled 'Falling In Between', would be signed over to Italian label Frontiers in October. Notably, JETHRO TULL's IAN ANDERSON featured on the song 'Bottom Of Your Soul' whilst former TOTO singer Joseph Williams also put in an appearance.
