Though technically not “Live From London”, this superb concert performance was recorded at the Apollo Theatre, Oxford in 1985 as part of UFO’s Misdemeanour Tour.
Phil Mogg provides his instantly recognisable vocals to UFO’s biggest hits, ably assisted on stage by Paul Gray (bass), Atomik Tommy M (lead guitar and vocals), Jim Simpson (drums) and Paul Raymond (keyboards and vocals). Enjoy an evening of rock from one of the world’s greatest bands. Formed in 1969 and originally called Hocus Pocus, vocalist Phil Mogg, drummer Andy Parker, bassist Pete Way and guitarist Mick Bolton changed the band’s name to UFO, as homage to the London club of the same name where they were first discovered and signed to Beacon Records. UFO had limited success in the early ‘70s but found global fame when German guitarist Michael Schenker, formerly of the band The Scorpions, joined them in 1973. His impact was immediate and in 1974 UFO released Phenomenon, an instant global classic showcasing the band’s new harder-edged guitar sound.
The album spawned hit tracks including Doctor Doctor and Rock Bottom and propelled UFO onto the world stage.
The next four years saw the band produce an album a year, (Force It – 1975, No Heavy Petting – 1976, Lights Out – 1977 and Obsession in 1978), with various musicians adding their talents, as the band’s lineup chopped and changed. The biggest and perhaps most detrimental change to the band came at the end of 1978 when, after growing tensions with Mogg and increasing alcohol abuse, Schenker left the band.
Despite being produced by former Beatles producer George Martin, the release of No Place To Run in 1980 didn’t draw the sales or interest of their previous albums, and the next ten years saw numerous band members come and go and a decline in popularity.
The ‘90s saw several band reunions, including Schenker coming back to the fold on more than one occasion but each soon ended with another parting of ways, different musicians leaving to pursue other projects.
When Vinnie Moore picked up his guitar and joined UFO in 2002, a new page in the band’s history was written, which saw the release of live sets, more touring and of course studio albums.
With their twentieth studio album due for release in 2012, there can be no doubt as to the popularity, staying power and versatility of this ever-evolving band.
